Seriously?

Yes, I really did write a letter to Keanu Reeves. Not the craziest thing I’ve ever done but definitely up there. When I told my friends I wrote to Keanu Reeves, they laughed. Well, I was laughing at myself and they laughed with me. And they all said ‘you’ve got to write this shit down’. I have written part of a book, part of a play, part of a screenplay. I wanted to write a blog to give me a kick up the pants and some short-term satisfaction. I worked in emergency response. Really, how long is my attention span?

About me – writer, aidworker, foster parent, chaos magnet

I’m a writer and my muse, currently mooching about the house, is Keanu Reeves (I call him K).  I used to be an aidworker in disasters and wars and am now back at home being a new parent to a ten-year old foster son. I have a magnet on my fridge: “She dreamed of a wild and dangerous life tinged with anarchy.” Well, I got it.  I am currently single but kinda sorta open to persuasion. I like spending a lot of time on my own which is why I decided to foster…oh hang on a minute…perhaps I didn’t think this all the way through….

What’s this all about?

lettertokeanu.com is about the comedy and tragedy of relationships and getting pregnant across continents, losing a child and finding a child, and now being stuck in the house with a raging foster child during coronavirus when the fostering honeymoon is definitely over.

The blog is in 3 parts because that letter changed everything: Before Keanu (BK), Year To Keanu (Y2K) and After Keanu (AK).

BK – My book in progress – let’s call it “fiction” so I don’t upset my parents – is Letter to Keanu: Ayla Sunday searches for love and sperm from Haiti to home, during disasters – some natural, some man-made and some just made by Ayla herself. With a doggedness and optimism that makes her friends laugh, cringe and cry, Ayla tells her story through a series of emails, short stories and plays written along the way, all read and discussed with the guest who knocks at her door and never leaves – Keanu Reeves.

Y2K – Year To Keanu. All things Keanu: interviews and fanmania, from and to adoring fans. Welcome to the Keanussance. If you’ve never been a fan, this is the Year to Keanu.

AK – I’m a new parent to a ten year old boy, a foster child placed with me when coronavirus was sneaking about in the background. I have always considered adulthood optional – one of the perks of being an aidworker are cooks and cleaners – and I have a good laugh and cry at my ineptitude and general cluelessness about raising this complicated but cool little man. He’s a quirky, part angel, part spawn of Satan, part comedian, kid. Some mind-blowingly spectacular melt-downs (mostly his), some musing, rambling, unexplained hair loss and empty wine bottles.

Huh?

This is research in action. I research something about Keanu which appears in Year 2 Keanu Y2K. It usually inspires some musing, wound up in my real life with my 10 year old foster child, in After Keanu AK. All of of which inform my book in progress, in Before Keanu BK. The three strands loosely plait together.

Turn back! You’re lost!

If you have said “fornicators” or “uttering profanities”, voted against gay marriage or for Trump, you are in the wrong place. Try here.

If you are looking for parenting or relationship advice you’re definitely in the wrong place. I don’t know what the fuck I’m doing!

You don’t have to own a castle to be a benefactor or patron of a writer and it sounds fancy doesn’t it? You can be a patron for the cost of a coffee. You can say stuff at parties, like “Yes I support a new writer and her foster child. Can’t have them all starving in garrets writing by candlelight can we? How much does a garret go for these days?” Seriously, thank you for supporting me, my muse, and my son in our daily lives.
